Lucy Dickens

Artist’s Profile

As the daughter of an artist, Lucy was introduced to many different art forms at an early age. She has always been drawn to art. Her mother explored a variety of mediums and especially excelled in watercolor.  She certainly passed on her creative spirit and talent to Lucy. Lucy’s father was and still is an accomplished photographer. Her family spent a great deal of time exploring the many extremes of Arizona. They found the most beautiful sights. Both her parents captured these sights in their own way through painting and photography. The more Lucy saw and experienced the more she was amazed at the incredible beauty around her that God created. Pencil sketches were the dominant focus early on with some exploration into charcoal and pastels.

As with many artists, Lucy first focused her career outside the art industry. She pursued a career in banking and investments, and then left this to help her husband start a contracting business. For several years, it was all time consuming with growing the business and raising small children. This certainly limited the time spent on her artwork. Through soul searching and in prayer with her husband, she decided to turn over the position and step out of the company. This would allow her to concentrate her time and energy much more on her artwork and on her family.

From the first time Lucy painted with acrylics, she fell in love with it. Since then, her passion for painting has grown substantially. It wasn’t long before painting began to consume most of her waking (and sleeping) thoughts! “I began to see nature in brush strokes and palette colors, yearning for a paint brush and a canvas.” Lucy feels truly blessed to have been gifted with the incredible talent of painting. She starts each painting with a prayer. “I believe that God is the supreme artist. His beauty in nature often leaves me awestruck. I want to capture these moments in time and share them with the viewer. I want to move people. I want to evoke emotion and thought through my paintings.  I believe that I have found my calling. This is what I am supposed to be doing with my life.”

Lucy’s paintings primarily consist of landscapes, seascapes, and sunrises/sunsets. She is drawn to color and the play of light and shadow. She loves the contrast of light and dark in a painting and feels this adds to the drama. What is happening in the shadows? What does the light touch and what is the effect? She loves the moment in a sunrise or sunset when the colors are at their most vivid. There is such a tiny window of time before it is lost forever. This is just the thing she strives to capture.
