David Lash: Wildlife Painter

Javadog Gallery presents the art of David Lash, April 24 through May 22nd. An artist reception will be held on May 10th from 3-7 pm and will coincide with the Old Town Art and Film Festival.

David is know to many in the Verde Valley area for his involvement in issues involved with protecting the environment and all it precious resources. Just following on the heels of Earth Day, David’s show also coincides with the Verde Birding Festival.

David Lash spends a great deal of time out in nature. He rides his mountain bike, kayaks, hikes, goes fly fishing and he sits quietly taking time to observe the sights, sounds and textures of nature. It only takes a few moments in conversation with him to see that he is deeply sensitive and has a great love and respect for nature.

His work shows great attention to detail particularly in the rendering of his wildlife images, yet that detail is back dropped in an abstraction that shows a random complexity, echoing nature. Because man has largely disconnected himself from nature in our highly electronic world, David understands the importance of finding ways to reconnect the viewer with nature and it’s intimate complexity.

The artist works in acrylic on masonite board. He starts by building up the multiple layered backgrounds of acrylic glazes. Sand and chemicals, giving them their textural qualities, often manipulate these glazes. Before the subject is added to this abstract field, compositional elements are studied carefully and shapes are then blocked into the background field and again built up layer by layer. One of the things that David is very concerned with is balancing the details with the resting areas of the painting. The abstract level of the painting is first and foremost!
